Located on County Road 870 along Lake Wedowee, Flat Rock Park is a public day-use lake destination known for its wide granite shoreline, open lake views, swimming areas, picnic spots, fishing access, and relaxed outdoor atmosphere. For Clay County families, lake visitors, weekend travelers, and longtime Lake Wedowee residents, it is one of the area’s most recognizable public places to enjoy the water without needing a private dock, lake house, or boat.
Flat Rock Park stands out because it does not feel like an ordinary lakeside park. Instead of a typical grass-and-sand shoreline, the park sits on a broad smooth-top granite formation that slopes toward Lake Wedowee. That rock gives the park its name, its look, and much of its local identity.
Visitors commonly use the park for swimming, picnicking, fishing, shoreline views, family outings, and short walks. Public information for the park also lists practical day-use amenities such as pavilions, picnic tables, grills, restrooms, swimming and fishing areas, and a nature trail.
Flat Rock Park is also tied to the larger Lake Wedowee story. Alabama Power describes the park as opening in 1995 as one of its day-use parks on Harris Lake, known locally as Lake Wedowee. The smooth granite that makes the park so visually distinct is connected to the construction history of Harris Dam, where granite from the area was used in dam construction materials.
